Picture Perfect

“And it’s exhausting having to try to be perfect all the time,” says Kate Hudson in the movie Bride Wars. I couldn’t agree more Kate; I just couldn’t agree more.

Something that has been on my heart for a while now is the idea of perfection. So many of us are striving to be what the world considers to be perfect, only to crumble to the ground when we fall short of the expectations, set by ourselves.

I know this is something a lot of girls struggle with already. Adding in the fact that we can’t be “perfect” Christians either? Messes me up.

Thinking about it realistically, I know I have never been, am not, and never will be perfect. There was only ever one perfect person and that was Jesus. I am so thankful for the perfect life He led and the sacrifice given for me; yet, sometimes I feel myself crumbling to the ground when I don’t meet my “Christian expectations.”

You may be thinking, what are “Christian expectations?”, which is a good question. The most obvious example for me is sin. As a Christian, I do strive to live like Jesus did, I do my best to avoid sin. I am a human being, I can not be perfect. None of us can.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

But let me tell you, sometimes I forget that. Especially in the earlier years of my walk with the Lord. I remember thinking to myself, “Well great. That’s it, I’m a terrible Christian. Am I even a Christian?”

Yeah. I thought that. I questioned if I was a Christian because I messed up.

People we are far from perfect. Far from it. But we serve a God who is.

“This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” (Psalm 18:30)

How do we manage to get by?

God’s grace and love for us. By the blood of Jesus, all our sins are washed away. We are made new.

A friend of mine has “Living for Grace, not perfection.” on her Twitter bio and I have always loved that, it’s so important to remember.

Maybe you’re thinking, “Hey we shouldn’t take advantage of God’s grace though!” No, we shouldn’t. I could not agree with you more; however, what I am saying is that our world does not have to come crashing down the second we mess up.

We run to Jesus. Letting Him heal us and make us new.

“I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will lead him and restore comfort to him and his mourners,” (Isaiah 57:18)

P.S. – 10/10 recommend that y’all listen to “All the Broken Pieces” by Matthew West.
