The world tries to tell us a lot of things about love. Love is stupid some say. Love is for suckers, love hurts and causes heartache, it’s only in the movies. Miley Cyrus’s song says love is selfish.
But what does the Bible say love is?
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong doing, but rejoices with truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a)
And love certainly is all of those things, the Bible tells us that. But what else? What is the epitome of love?
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8)
God is love.
Love is not stupid. Love is not for suckers; it doesn’t hurt or cause heartache, love is way better than anything in the movies. Love is not selfish. Love doesn’t make sense, to us. Our brains can’t completely grasp the concept or understand how the Creator of the universe could die to save sinners like us.
God is love.
Love is Jesus Christ being nailed to the cross. Love is His blood flowing down. Love is taking on the weight of all our sins and shame. Love is the most selfless act I have ever known.
God. Is. Love.
