What is community? The dictionary defines community as “a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage”. To me community is a little something more than that, true community anyways. True community comes to us whenever we surround ourselves with a group of believers who encourage us in our everyday lives and in our walk with Christ.
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Before I came to ETBU I had never really experienced true community; however, in the few short months that I have been here the Lord has given me just that. True community. A group of girls who daily encourage me in my walk, who are not afraid to confront me whenever I’m headed down the wrong path, and who truly pray for me and with me. What a blessing it is to have such a group of friends to do life with, its something I didn’t even ask for. The Lord gave it to me because he knew I needed it. We all need it. I truly believe that God brought us together because we are all so different, but that’s what makes our group work. That’s what gives us community. All of the different parts of the body of Christ working together.
“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (Romans 12:4-5)
Community is something that God gives to us that is a beautiful blessing, but it is ultimately to show his glory everyone. Whenever we do life together, showing each other love and mercy, it’s a reflection of Christ’s love for us. In true community we learn to love each other like Jesus first loved us, and that’s something that the world really needs to see.
“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)
